MK2 acquires Cinesur

The French exhibition-international sales group MK2 now owns 9 theaters in Andalusia.

Founded 40 years ago by Marin Karmitz, MK2 now runs 11 Parisian cinemas with a total of 65 screens. On June 5, MK2, which today is managed by Karmitz's two sons, Nathanael and Elisha, acquired the Spanish Cinesur theater chain (9 theaters, accounting for 109 screens). Founded in 1932 by the Sanchez-Ramade family, Cinesur is the leading theater chain in Andalusia. MK2, which until now had not ventured beyond Paris, is planning to invest in other territories after its Spanish acquisition. This expansion of its exhibition activities marks a turning point in the group's history, in the wake of the commercial failure of a number of productions released in its theaters.

MK2 intends to inject the same dynamism into its new Spanish theaters as is characteristic of the MK2 chain in Pairs by exporting concepts that have proved highly successful in France, notably the programming of films in their original version, the organization of "MK2 Philo" screenings, workshops for children, and events in high-profile locations (similar to the Drive-in at the Grand Palais Museum in Paris), while taking into account the local context and target audiences. In keeping with this goal, the first screening will be held at 3 p.m.
