2nd Franco-German Film Meetings a success

On November 26 and 27, 2004, close to 280 French and German movie industry professionals gathered at the Lumière Institute for the 2nd Franco-German Film Meetings.

This event, which aims to provide assistance to professionals in establishing contacts with their colleagues in their partner country, was acclaimed as an all-out success. While co-productions between France and Germany have been on the rise in recent years as a result of the re-implementation of a co-production "Mini-Treaty," industry professionals continue to require support in identifying partners for their projects. Objectives have clearly been met for some participants, since in the time between the two first editions of this event in the French city of Lyon, two films have successfully been co-financed by France and Germany.

A number of workshops were held during the two-day event, covering the following subjects: co-productions between France and Germany, referring to concrete examples of current productions in the pipeline; European film funding schemes; the circulation of films; the point of view of directors; the fight against piracy in both countries; image education and the television channel Arte. A debate held between three French directors (Dominik Moll, Tonie Marshall and Julie Bertuccelli) and three German directors (Caroline Link, Oskar Roehler and Christian Petzold), moderated by Thierry Frémaux and Alfred Holighaus, was also a first at this event, and enabled all present to gauge the importance of continued dialogue between filmmakers from the two countries.

Following on from these two events held in France at the Lumière Institute, a legendary location celebrated as the birthplace of the movies, participants will meet up again in November 2005 in Cologne. Once again, the aim of this meeting will be to further cooperation between French and German professionals, and to develop plans for the future concerning the circulation of films in Europe.
