"Amelie" tops a million in Germany
Exactly a month after its release in Germany, Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s film has been seen by audiences numbering one million, reaching 1,142,730 admissions on September 16.
The film’s career got off to a promising start – and hasn’t let up. Prokino launched the film in a 164-print release on August 16, and in the fourth week of its run, “Amelie from Montmartre” maintains 6th place at the German box office – close runner up to “Planet of the Apes.” With distribution now intensified to 232 prints, the film garnered 142,000 admissions during its fifth weekend, testifying to its continued popularity. Its average return per print is second only to “Bridget Jones’s Diary,” the number 1 film at the German box office this weekend. It’s a sure winner that Amelie will top 1,500,000 admissions, and may even reach 2,000,000, a total unequaled in the German market since “Asterix and Obelix versus Caesar.”
