Korea: 2nd Seoul French Film Festival

From June 16 through 21, Unifrance and the French Embassy in South Korea are hosting the second Seoul French Film Festival.

Motivated by the healthy state of Korean cinema, the ongoing efforts made by both Korea and France in support of their national movie industries and the interest shown by French professionals in this increasingly significant market, Unifrance and the French Embassy in Seoul decided to organize a French Film Festival in the South Korean capital, at a similar time to the Yokohama French Film Festival. The second festival will take place from June 16 through 21 this year.

12 feature films from the Yokohama Festival line-up will be presented to professionals and the public, subtitled in Korean. With backing from their Korean distributors, four films will be accompanied by artistic delegations, who will then travel on to Yokohama.

As in 2001, the cinema associated with the event is the CINEMA CENTRAL 6, a new multiplex located in the Seocho district.

South Korea is the number 2 market for French films after Japan. Boosted by a high level of activity in film production and increasing international recognition for its films, Korea values its movie industry very highly. Korean films commanded 50% of the domestic market last year, and the enforcement of screen quotas supports and encourages the expansion of a strong and viable industry. In this market, French films clearly serve as a reference point for both professionals and the movie-going public. With 15 French films distributed in 2001 (14 in 2000 and 10 in 1999), the appeal of French fare in Korea is strong. French films have demonstrated their ability to attract large audiences, with 500,000 spectators registered for "Kiss of the Dragon" 170,000 for "Pola X," 370,000 for "Taxi 2," 565,000 for "Brotherhood of the Wolf," 500,000 for "The Crimson Rivers," 220,000 for "Amelie," 100,000 for "Princes and Princesses" and 70,000 for "The Taste of Others."
