Budapest French Film Festival turns 10!

This year, the Hungarian distributors Best Hollywood, Budapest Film, FF Film & Music Kft., Mokep Film Distribution, Paradigma Film, and Spi International Hungary are pulling out all the stops for the festival’s 10th anniversary, which opens April 20 at the Corvin cinema, and will showcase 10 French films.

Held in Budapest until April 23, the event will feature the following French titles: “Marock,” “L’Enfer,” “Hidden,” “Time to Leave ,” “The Squatter,” “Lemming,” “The Beat That My Heart Skipped,” “Never Say Never,” “Anthony Zimmer,” “Changing Times.”

The French delegation will include the directors Laïla Marrakchi, Alexandre Castagnetti, Corentin Julius, Eric Civanyan, Michael Haneke, Dominik Moll, Jérôme Salle, and Danis Tanovic; along with the actors Morjana Alaoui, Mélanie Doutey, Maurice Benichou, and Gérard Jugnot, who will be in Budapest to present their films to Hungarian audiences and meet with local media representatives. .

This event is sponsored by Citroen, and is jointly organized by Unifrance, the French Embassy in Hungary, and Upperstudio.

This year’s 10th anniversary festival benefits from the patronage of the Budapest City Hall and the Hungarian Ministry of Culture, who remain steadfast supporters of French films.

In a country with a population of 10 million, 32 French films gained release in 2005 (including 19 French-language productions and 13 French films shot in a foreign language). Leading the top performing titles were “Transporter 2,” “The Corsican File,” “A Very Long Engagement,” “The Daltons,” and “Empire of the Wolves.” Six French films were released on Hungarian screens in the first three months of 2006. In 10 years, 6.94 million Hungarian spectators have had the chance to discover 168 French films (including 96 French-language productions).

Founded in 1997, the Budapest French Film Festival has rapidly established itself as a key link between French films and Hungarian spectators keen to keep abreast of the latest offerings in European film production. The festival now serves as a vital launching platform for films presented to large audiences in one of the most prestigious theaters in the Hungarian capital, as well as in seven provincial cities.
