United States: the first awards and nominations for 2003

As 2003 draws to a close, French films are attracting top prizes and nominations in the U.S.A.

The first of these is the award for Best Animated Film given by the New York Film Critics’ Circle to “The Triplets of Belleville” by Sylvain Chomet. Currently on the screens in the U.S.A., the film was released November 26 by Sony Classics and has already clocked up close to $330,000 at the box office. “The Triplets” has launched a promising international career with around 300,000 spectators and 2.2 million euros to its credit.

Then there is the Golden Globe nomination for “Monsieur Ibrahim et les fleurs du Coran” by François Dupeyron, in the Best Foreign Language Film category. The film has just recently been released in the United States, also distributed by Sony Classics (December 5). Fresh on the international circuit, the film has registered thus far 380,000 admissions and tallies 2.2 million euros.

It is worth adding that the French-Canadian co-production, “Invasion of the Barbarians” has also been nominated in this category.
