Eighteen-year-old Philippe Le Clerc lives in Paris but his heart belongs to America. The star of his high school soccer team, Philippe worships the writing of William Faulkner and wants nothing more than to walk among the cottonwood trees of the South. His dream comes true when he's awarded a scholarship to Washington and Lee University in Virginia. When he arrives at the university, he unwittingly agrees to tryout for the respect and friendship of the team's star quarterback, Cal Cate. Then Philippe sets eyes on April, the beautiful black housekeeper of one of his professors. But April isn't just a cleaning woman - she's earning money to return to a university in Maryland to finish her degree. April is drawn to Philippe's gentle nature even though she knows how dangerous a black-white romance could be. Still, she agrees to meet Philippe. And so begins the first of several secret meetings that culminate when Philippe and April finally make love. While Philippe is blinded by his love for April and envisions a future together, she knows their love is doomed. When April spots Philippe and another woman together, she nonetheless feels betrayed and says goodbye. Philippe is crushed, but his life will soon take an interesting turn. When the football team's kicker is hurt, Philippe - because of his soccer skills - is made his replacement. Now the stage is set for Philippe to become a hero, and just maybe reclaim his love for April.
