"I remember the bombs falling on Warsaw on that day of Kippur, the day of the Great Pardon in the year 1939. One year later, the Jews in Warsaw and its surroundings - almost 600 000 people, the population of Lyon or Munich at the time - were moved into an enclosed space of a few city streets. The Warsaw ghetto was born. Cut off from the world by a wall of hostility and a mortal threat, the jews nevertheless continued to hope. Some waited for God, others waited for the assistance of mankind. Having given us the knowledge of Good and Evil and a conscience with which to make our own choices, God did not think it necessary to reveal himself. There was no helping hand, no work of succour. The Jews were alone, always alone. I have never been able to accept that idea. "The world is based upont thirty-six righteous people", says Rabby Avaye in the Talmud. "Out of eighteen thousand", says Rabbi Raba. "Out of nine thousand", corrects Pascal. So, having fought for so many causes all over the world, I decided to go and look for them." Marek Halter
