During the First World War, a lawyer and a doctor buy an old house in the mountains which they convert into a "rest home" a kind of hotel-cum-sanatorium, a place of leisure and cure, for both holiday-makers in search of peace and quiet and ill people suffering from nervous and pulmonary ailments. Yet behind the hotel's luxury, and the beauty of the landscapes of this strange mountain-top setting, whose single link with the outside world is the daily passage of war-wounded, there lurks a disturbing reality : unbearable solitude, sordid affairs of money and sex, betrayal, absurd deaths, calculated murders, emotional devastation... all of which serves to warp the daily veneer of decorum and good conduct. This is a human "comedy" which through solitude and suffering reveals the underlying nature and ambiguity of each individual.
"Every story has a function, whether small or large, and inevitably provokes reflection and questioning , whether superficial or deep. Such is its nature and its goal, its reason for being and its destiny. It is sometimes the more or less faithful mirroring of the world in which we live, or in which others have lived, today or yesterday; but it can also, via its visual representation and narrative unfolding, be completely at odds with its own codes, appearing as the displaced image of this reality. And it is perhaps through such blatant desynchronisation that a story takes on its essential meaning." (Yves Angelo)
