While pregnant with her first child, Emma learns that she has breast cancer. Her doctor advises an abortion; recommended treatment is, according to him, incompatible with pregnancy. Her partner, Simon, encourages Emma to consult another specialist, Dr. Morin, who maintains that treatment can be carried out even while she's pregnant. Emma regains her confidence. The body that had let her down becomes a source of life: now she must fight for two.
I met dignified men, women and children. I discovered a world we don't
really speak about. A cold, smooth world of muffled, metallic sounds. Why
me? Why them? How can we make sense of this irrational thing, this disease
eating away at us from inside? Where can we find the strength necessary to
face each day and continue down the path of debiltating treatments which
seems like it will never end? The film's objective was to get to the heart
of this battle in a purely clinical way. All the details, nothing
elliptical, close in on the faces. I don't look at the couple in a
passionate way; distance and humor keep me from sinking. "Haut les coeurs
!" isn't a film about courage. My characters aren't heroes, they have no
choice. They're obliged to fight.
