Tony Thompson, a 9-year-old American, has a lot of trouble adapting to his new life in the Scottish village where his father is overseeing the construction of a tourist complex and golf course on Lord McAshton’s property.
He’s bullied by Nigel and Flint, his classmates, and misunderstood by his teacher, who feels that his fascination for vampires borders on the pathological.
One evening, when his parents are at a reception hosted by Lord McAshton, Tony is left alone in his room. Decked out with paper fangs and daubed with ketchup, he pretends to be a vampire. He is taken by surprise when a bat flies into his room.
The bat is none other than Rudolph, a young vampire exactly Tony’s age.
