A morning with UniFrance at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival
Joining our institutional counterparts from Belgium (Geneviève Kinet, Eric Franssen), Switzerland (Simon Koenig, Sylvain Vaucher) and Luxembourg (Nicole Jans, Norbert Laporte) at this breakfast event were around forty established film producers. The casual setting was conducive to discussions about the current context for animated short films and exchanging news about participants' respective movie industries.
Leading figures in the animated film scene honored the event with their presence, such as Laurent Witz, who produced and co-directed Mr. Hublot (winner of the Oscar for Best Short Animated Film Oscar in 2014), as did directors of top film schools, including Vincent Gilot (La Cambre) and Jürgen Haas (HSLU), as well as high-caliber buyers and distributors, such as Pascale Faure (Canal+) and Annabel Sebag (Autour de Minuit).
Hosted primarily by members of the UniFrance Films Short Film Commission Florence Keller (L'Agence du court métrage), Alexandre Charlet (Les Films du Cygne), Les Films du Cygne(Bagan Films), and Fabrice Préel-Cléach (offshore), discussions focused on the wider global context, as demonstrated by the speech given by Lilyane Crosnier (Europe Creative–MEDIA) and the presence of international guests Iryna Kaplychna (Krok Festival, Ukraine), Cinzia Spironello (Other Voices, Italy), Kyung Hwa Lee (Seoul Animated Film Festival, Korea), Mitsue Eguchi (Tokyo Animated Film Festival, Japan), Agusti Argelich (TV3 Catalunya, Spain), Vrej Kassouny (Festival ReAnimania, Armenia), and Nuno Amorim (Cinanima Festival, Portugal).
A particular emphasis was placed on transmedia and new technologies in the animation sector this year, and we are delighted to have welcomed the participation of Voyelle Acker (France Télévisions), Rudy Turkovics (Pictanovo), and William Schlegel (Gamific).
Initial review of the Francophone Breakfast
At the invitation of Geneviève Kinet (Wallonie Bruxelles Images), the teams from Swiss Films, the SODEC, Film Fund Luxembourg, Europe Creative, and UniFrance Films met up the following day on the terrace of the office of their Walloon counterparts to make an initial assessment of the Francophone Breakfast event.
Thanks to highly positive feedback, the success of this year's event has led to the confirmation of a repeat performance at the 2015 Annecy International Animation Film Festival. Next year's meeting will involve the participation of a greater number of guests and will place the spotlight on existing interconnections and transition possibilities between the production of animated short films and feature films.
In addition to their meetings at Clermont-Ferrand, Cannes, and Annecy, representatives from the Belgian, Canadian, Swiss, Luxembourg, and French organizations will also be gathering in Paris later this year for the Francophone Co-Production Meetings, to be held November 24-26, 2014, at the Forum des Images. Organized as a sidebar to the 18th Cinéma du Québec Festival in Paris, these Meetings will provide another opportunity for short film sector professionals to share their views and experiences and discuss current projects and industry news.
