Stratospheric launch for Lucy in China
Bolstered by an ambitious release on 6,000 3D and IMAX 3D screens, the film by Luc Besson dominates the Chinese box office just three days after its launch, taking over $20 million in ticket sales.
Released by Fundamental Films, Lucy has easily jumped to the top of the box office in 中国, attracting a massive 3.19 million spectators on its opening weekend and capturing a staggering 40% of the market.
This is excellent news for EuropaCorp, who with this film have registered the most successful launch of all time for a French film in China, and also for Luc Besson, who betters the performance of his 2010 hit Extraordinary Adventures of Adèle Blanc-Sec/アデル／ファラオと復活の秘薬 (1.9 million admissions).
Thanks to this outstanding debut, Lucy now registers a total of over 45 million admissions from around forty international markets, including 15.7 million in the アメリカ合衆国/English-speaking Canada, 3.5 million in メキシコ, 3.4 million in ロシア, and 2.2 million in the イギリス.
The film thus consolidates its position as the 2nd most successful French film in foreign theaters. However, the record set in 2012 by another EuropaCorp production, Taken 2, with its 47.8 million admissions score, is now closer than ever to being rivaled...
