Around the World: October 31, 2016
Keep up to date on trips made by French actors and directors as they accompany their films around the world (for commercial releases, retrospectives, master classes, festivals, preview screenings, and more) in our bi-monthly bulletin.
A host of French artists are traveling abroad this fall, including Sylvain Chomet (photo), who gave a master class on October 24 at the Korean Academy of Film Arts in Seoul in collaboration with the Bucheon International Animation Film Festival (October 21-25), which highlighted French animated films this year.
Olivier Assayas and Alain Guiraudie made the trip to ルーマニア to present their films at the 7th Films From Cannes event in Bucharest (October 14-23). The directors also met with students at the UNATC (National University of Theatrical Arts and Cinematography) during master classes held on October 18 and 21.
As concerns fall season film festivals, the Viennale (held until November 2) attracted the attendance of numerous French actors and directors, including Alain Guiraudie, Alice Diop, Arthur Harari, Bertrand Bonello, Bulle Ogier, Claire Simon, Damien Manivel, Rebecca Zlotowski, and Virginie Efira. The Hof International Film Festival in ドイツ (October 25-30), welcomed the presence of Muriel and Delphine Coulin, Maxime Motte, Safy Nebbou, and Raphaël Personnaz. Valeria Bruni-Tedeschi attended the screening of Like Crazy by Paolo Virzi, which marked the opening of the Haifa Film Festival in イスラエル on October 15, while Lola Doillon also traveled to the festival to accompany her film Fanny's Journey, which was screened on October 17 as part of the French Evening program. And, as proof that long journeys are always worth the effort, Jérôme Reybaud traveled to インド to present his film 4 Days in France, which was selected at the 18th Mumbai Film Festival (October 20-27). Reybaud tells us that "discovering India was a shock for me, and to discover that Indians could be moved by a film that is seemingly so far-removed from their lives was a total blast. An excellent long distance encounter."
Among commercial releases in this period, Fatsah Bouyahmed was in Montreal on October 12 to promote The Cow, which hit the screens in ケベック州 on October 21. Katell Quillévéré, Anne Dorval, and Finnegan Oldfield traveled to Lausanne on October 27 and 28 to take part in publicity for Heal the Living, which will be launched in French-speaking Switzerland on November 2. Stéphanie Di Giusto made the trip to Madrid on October 27 and 28 for the Spanish release of The Dancer, while Ahmed Dramé was in Miami on October 21 to accompany the US release of Héritiers by Marie-Castille Mention-Schaar.
In the lead-up to the release of Love is Dead in ベルギー on November 23, a day of media interviews was held In Brussels on October 25, at which the film's director Éric Capitaine and lead cast members Benjamin Lavernhe and Elisa Ruschke took part.
To the east of Europe, ロシア once again attracted visits from French artists attending film previews, with Lambert Wilson and Jérôme Salle presenting The Odyssey in Moscow on October 21.
And to wrap up this report, Alain Guiraudie, who has evidently been traveling a great deal to present his film Staying Vertical, participated in two preview screenings in ハンガリー (in Budapest and Debrecen) on October 27 and 31.
