"Amelie" and "Inch’Allah Dimanche," Toronto prizewinners
Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s "Amelie" won the Audience Award and Yamina Benguigui’s "Inch’Allah Dimanche" the International Critics’ Prize (FIPRESCI) at the 26th Toronto Film Festival, which closed Sunday September 16.
The Audience Award – the festival’s main prize – joins the growing collection garnered by Jeunet’s film. "Amelie"’s international career, already off to a great start (1 million admissions in 4 weeks in Germany alone), is set to continue with upcoming release dates. One to watch out for in particular is November 2, when the film, distributed by Miramax, will be released in American theaters.
The second French prizewinner at the Canadian festival was "Inch’Allah Dimanche," debut feature by Yamina Benguigui. It carried off the FIPRESCI prize and is due for release in France at the end of the year.
