12 French films showing in the United States!
12 French feature films are still holding their ground in Variety magazine's weekly box office results late April.
While "Amelie" by Jean-Pierre Jeunet and "Brotherhood of the Wolf" by Christophe Gans remain the only films so far to boast ticket sales in the millions ($32.5 million for the former and $11 million for the latter), numerous other films have met with considerable success at their own level. They include "Fat Girl!" by Catherine Breillat ($670,000) and "What Time Is It Over There?" by Tsai Ming-Liang ($165,000). Two other films have just kicked off their American careers (5 weeks on the screens to date): "The Piano Teacher" by Michael Haneke ($261,000 ) and "Time Out" by Laurent Cantet ($215,000).
Among the other French titles currently showing, it is worth noting the significant role played by the distributor Wellspring, which is handling four French films: "What Time Is It Over There?" by Tsai Ming-Liang, "Les Destinées" by Olivier Assayas, "Girls Can't Swim" by Anne-Sophie Birot and " Marie Baie des Anges" by Manuel Pradal.
