International Film Festivals: French shorts in the limelight
Prizes galore for French short films in October 2002!
The short film "Comme un seul homme" by Jean-Louis Gonnet was awarded the Louis le Prince Prize for the Best Documentary at the Leeds International Film Festival (October 3-13). Produced by 4 A 4 Productions, the film also gained prestige at the Uppsala International Short Film Festival (October 22-27), where it picked up the Grand Prix. The Special Jury Prize went to "On a beau être bête, on a faim quand même" by Anne-Laure Daffis and Léo Marchand (Lardux films).
Still on a winning run, "Squash" by Lionel Bailliu has been granted the Audience Prize at the Cork Film Festival (October 6-13) as well as a Special Mention from the Jury at Rouyn-Noranda (Quebec, October 26-31). Additionally, the highly acclaimed "La Mort de Tau" by Jérôme Boulbès won the award for Best Animated Film at the Sitges Film Festival (October 3-13).
"J’attendrai le suivant" by Philippe Orreindy, produced by La Boîte, has also been particularly well received. It won the Best Short Film award at the Sao Paulo Mostra (October 18-31) and was honored with the Golden Spike at the Valladolid International Film Festival (October 25 – November 2) as well as a Special Mention from the FIPRESCI (International Critics') Jury.
"Balibalo" by Marc Andréoni has also picked up two awards at Geneva's "Cinema Tout Ecran" Festival: the TV5 Prize for Best French-language Short Film and the TSR Prize.
Finally, the Leipzig International Festival for Documentary and Animated Film (October 15-20) has honored "L’Exil à Sedan" by Michaël Gaumnitz with the Jury of ver.di (United Public Services Trade Union) Award.
