16 French films showcased at Karlovy Vary
With 16 titles programmed, French cinema will take a prominent position at the 43rd Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, to be held from July 4 through 12 this year.
Sam Karmann’s film La vérité ou presque, selected in the Official Competition, will be screened in the presence of the director and the singer/actress Catherine Olson on Sunday July 6. This screening will be followed by a grand dinner event hosted by Unifrance, with guests including distributors, journalists, and festival directors from a range of countries, who will have the opportunity to meet with the French delegation. The Franco-Belgian film Les Tremblements lointains by Manuel Poutte, also screened in the Official Competition, will be presented by the director and two French actors, Jean-François Stévenin and Amélie Daure.
Grégoire Colin, who was at Karlovy Vary in 2005 for Raoul Ruiz’s film Le Domaine perdu (The Lost Domain), will this year accompany the film Le Tueur by Cédric Anger, which won the Variety Critic’s Choice Award. This film also featured in the Official Selection at the Rotterdam International Film Festival.
At Karlovy Vary this year, the director Marion Laine will introduce her debut feature film, Un Cœur Simple (A Simple Heart), a screen adaptation of a Gustav Flaubert story that stars Sandrine Bonnaire.
Paris by Cédric Klapisch, starring Juliette Binoche and Romain Duris, selected out of competition, will be presented in a preview screening prior to its commercial release in the Czech Republic on July 31, 2008.
The latest offerings from leading French directors such as Jacques Rivette (Ne touchez pas la hache, aka Don't Touch the Axe), Emmanuel Mouret (Un baiser s’il vous plaît, aka Shall We Kiss?), and Léa Fazer (Notre univers impitoyable) are also scheduled at the festival.
The Open Eyes section, which is closely tied to the Cannes Film Festival selection, will be showcasing the French co-productions Le Silence de Lorna (The silence of Lorna) by the Dardenne brothers and Three Monkeys by Nuri Bilge Ceylan.
The festival, which last year attracted 135,000 spectators, will present a total of 250 films this year.
