The very first Franco-German Film Meetings are to be held on November 3 and 4 at the Institut Lumière in Lyon!
Within the framework of the Franco-German Film Academy set up in June 2000 by the German Chancellor and French President Jacques Chirac, French and German professionals have decided to organize annual meetings entitled the Franco-German Film Meetings (Toscan du Plantier Forums). The aim of the Meetings is to strengthen cooperation between the two countries' movie industries. Note that the official French title of the event is Les Rendez-vous franco-allemands du cinéma (Rencontres Toscan du Plantier).
The event notably aims to facilitate:
- an increased awareness of industry representatives and the funding systems in both countries
- a joint consideration of the major issues affecting Europe
- the creation of new axes of cooperation in the production and distribution sectors
This project was given the stamp of approval by the French and German Culture Ministers during a meeting of the Franco-German Film Academy on February 10, 2003, in Berlin.
The first of the Franco-German Film Meetings will take place on November 3 and 4, 2003, at the Institut Lumière in the French city of Lyon, to be opened by the French and German Culture Ministers. At this first event, French and German industry professionals will be invited to attend a number of workshops: Europe-wide Cinema from the Franco-German Axis (official French title: L’Europe du cinéma à partir de l’axe franco-allemand), Production Funding Developments in France and Germany (Evolutions des financements de la production en France et en Allemagne), Distribution Perspectives in France and Germany (Perspectives de distribution en France et en Allemagne) and An Appraisal of Franco-German Cooperation (Le bilan des échanges franco-allemands).
These Franco-German Film Meetings will usher in the German Film Festival organized by Export-Union, to be held at the Institut Lumière November 4 through 8 (a program of films screened at the Arlequin cinema in Paris, October 15-22). This festival will give the general public the opportunity to discover the latest German productions.
This industry event has been set up by a non-profit organization (a French "Association loi 1901"), Les Rendez-vous franco-allemands du cinéma (Franco-German Film Meetings), established by producers, directors and industry organizations from both countries. Its Presidency has been entrusted to Brigitte Sauzay, Advisor to the German Chancellor for German-French relations. Margaret Menegoz (from Les Films du Losange and Unifrance President) and Peter Sehr (director, P-Artisan Filmproduktion) are Vice-Presidents.
The organization of this first-time event has been assigned to Unifrance.
This project is the third initiative to be set in motion by the Franco-German Academy after the implementation of a production aid mini-treaty for bilateral co-productions and the setting up of Franco-German masterclasses that have, over the past three years, brought together French and German film students for a series of courses at the Ludwigsburg Filmakademie and the FEMIS Film School in Paris.
