UniFrance Films released the results of its annual study on foreign sales of French short films at the 2012 Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival.
The following results are revealed in the study:
€652,276 in turnover from short film sales (against €495,135 in 2009, excluding sales to Arte and non-commercial transactions with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs).
€523,721 in turnover from sales to foreign buyers (excluding French buyers with foreign broadcast networks: TV5 Monde, Arte, Canal+ Overseas, CinéCinéma).
1,222 sales (against 734 in 2009) of 795 individual titles (against 443 in 2009).
Television networks are the chief contributors to these figures, accounting for 77% of sales turnover in 2010. The most active countries for short film acquisition were Italy, Russia, the United States, Venezuela, and Spain. It is pertinent to note that foreign film festivals accounted for 5.5% of sales revenues, proving the continuing importance of hiring film prints in the French short film market.
A surprisingly big player in the field, VOD platforms provided the fourth highest revenues for French film sales, with 4.8% of total turnover, ahead of DVD revenues (1.2%). These VOD platforms consisted of 65% North American buyers, including Google and iTunes.
