I was surprised to surprise people when I suggested adapting Donald Westlake's novel, a crazy novel that imperturbably and obstinately piles up unlikely encounters and twists of fate. I know what the novel made me want to film : a car chase on a motorway at a very slow speed; endless car accidents caused by bad drivers; characters seen from above by a hawk as they fight over a totally inedible object; dogs that topple men like skittles; a man who runs after a woman, him on foot and her in a car; a pretty woman pushing a harp case through the streets; a woman locking her lover who isn't really her lover in a closet; a man, who hopes to become a woman's lover, locking her husband up in a closet, and so one closet leads an other; men and women who decide to start a new life at 13:59; heroes who triumph but not in the way they imagined.."
