I am one of those people who believe that everything that happens to us in childhood, the fun and games but also the fears and phobias and anxieties, molds the adults we grow into. I didn’t invent the idea — there are libraries full of books about it — but I feel it so strongly that the kind of stories that move me, about which I want to make films, are usually connected to that area. I normally feel much less comfortable dealing with adults’ feelings and emotions. I’ve told stories about adults before and certainly will again, but I am much more deeply moved — for reasons of my own personality — by stories that involve children.
