Pierre lives with the painful memory of his dead wife. Sometimes, her ghost appears, bringing him peace. But, one day, Baptiste, Pierre's brother, comes to stay, upsetting the daily routineŠ
“Les Solitaires” is a chamber piece, not only because the action is set in a few interiors, but also because of its similarity with chamber music. It is staged like a kind of quintet: two violins (Pierre and Baptiste) provide the main lines of the central theme, a cello (Madeleine) comes in, sweet and low-pitched, when the drama reaches a peak, a viola (Eva) describes new themes and amplifies the overarching architecture, and finally, the clarinet (Alice) shines a ray of light into the dark forest of strings, but can never illuminate it entirely.
Crucially, in spite of everything, this little composition ends with a jubilant gallop.
