あらすじ
“The Scent of Rio” tells the story of a family shaped by the migration waves of the early 20th century between Japan and Brazil. Jorge and Jun, father and son, have been estranged for years. Jorge lives in Japan, while Jun resides in Brazil. One day, Jorge writes a letter to his son a letter that goes unanswered. Later, Jorge suffers a stroke that leaves him in a deeply altered state of consciousness. Jun then flies to Tokyo to finally respond to his father’s letter and to help him die. But faced with the weight of this task, Jun finds himself unable to act, unable to honor the promise he made to his father and to himself. Jorge is breathing, but can he still be considered truly alive? Do memories and scents still echo somewhere within him? It’s been a year since Jun moved into his father’s home, his days quietly marked by the visits of a caregiver. We follow him through a day unlike any other a day when he finally chooses not to turn away from the burden of his promise. In order to find the strength to act, he transforms the moment into a ritual, expressing his emotions the only way he knows how. At last, he answers the letter and his father’s request. A conversation unfolds across time, blending Japanese and Brazilian voices until they finally find harmony. Gradually, Jun releases his resentment and regret, making space for tenderness and compassion. What Jun longed for was to turn a painful act into a solemn one. By offering his father a dignified passage into death, he reconnects with his roots and shared memories. In the end, both father and son find peace ready to embrace a new cycle.
