This was an extraordinary case and trial that shocked the entire world. For four months, 51 men appeared before the Avignon Judicial Court, accused of raping Gisèle Pelicot while she slept, incited to commit this crime by Dominique Pelicot, Gisèle’s husband. The vast majority of these men were well-integrated into society: they had jobs and family lives. But behind the scenes, they all frequented the “Coco” site, a veritable hub of illicit activities ranging from child pornography to drug dealing and prostitution. We met with six women who shared their lives with these men. Amid feelings of disgust, shame, love, forgiveness, and guilt, their poignant accounts describe the impact on their lives and the collapse of their families over the course of several months. Depression, job loss, prison visits, loneliness, denial, and divorce—these women recount how they experienced the tragedy that turned their lives and those of their families upside down.
