Between April and August this year, 20 French feature films were released in Spanish theaters. By the end of August, these titles had already attracted 1.65 million spectators.
The top performer is "Danny The Dog" (New World), credited with 446,000 admissions, followed by "Saint Ange" (Vertigo Films), with 287,000 admissions. The other French films released in this period also boast some of the best scores of the year, including "The Daltons" (166,000 spectators), "Les Poupées russes" (107,000 spectators), and "After You" (84,000 spectators). It is worth noting the particular success of "Thirtyfive Something," which, after three weeks on the screens, has already charmed over 100,000 spectators, and looks set for an excellent career in Spain.
After two lackluster years for French films in Spain, it seems that this market is once again joining those countries with the highest admissions figures for French productions. This year, French films have already registered 5.6 million spectators after 8 months in theaters, outstripping results for the entire year in 2002, which was a highly successful year. And the list of titles slated for release in the four remaining months of the year raises hopes for total attendance figures for French films of over 6 million spectators in 2005!
