2010 was an excellent year for French films in Japan, registering the best results since 2003. French films attracted 3.58 million spectators and captured 2% of the market.
This triumph can be partly attributed to Oceans, which achieved one of its highest scores abroad in Japan, pulling in over 2 million admissions. This ranks as the best performance for a French-language film abroad since Amelie.
The Extraordinary Adventures of Adèle Blanc-Sec, Le Concert, and Micmacs also posted fine results.
2010 will go down as a positive year for the Japanese theatrical market overall, with a 7% rise in box office revenues over 2009 (+3% in admissions), largely due to high ticket prices for 3D screenings. National films saw their hold on the market slip back to 53.6%, although the decline remains limited at this stage. 2010 also confirmed a clear slowdown in the multiplex boom, while the independent film sector is gripped by a deep recession resulting in the closure of several theaters in central Tokyo.
