あらすじ
Julien, 20, is a grownup boy who relates to the outside world in a complex, inscrutable manner. Though treated like a mental defective at school, he is regarded as a gentle, comical dreamer at home. His mother, confronted with increasing turmoil among the family and desperately resisting pressure to send Julien to an institution, brings in a “shrink” to give therapy sessions to the whole family, unfortunately with no results. The solution eventually comes from elsewhere: the father’s courage and a long-kept secret finally revealed...

About
I began with an urge to tell a fictional story with characters. I wanted to talk about difference. As I went about creating the parts of Julien and his mother, I approached the question of how far one can accept a child who doesn’t “fit in”. What does it feel like to live with this difference? When Julien’s mother recalls the day she was told that her son wasn’t completely normal and she refused to believe it, the film takes on a special meaning. She is firmly convinced that her boy is beautiful and she’s going to make his beauty radiate through the family. This belief is her strength. People have to believe in each other or they can’t live together. It’s death. At the beginning, the mother is the stronger parent, the one who bears the burden while the father seems to have his head in the stars with the Mir space station. Then the mother loses her footing and goes to pieces before finally picking herself up again. The film is about that, too. (Claude Mouriéras - excerpt from press kit)
