あらすじ
An impoverished corn planter from Benin wants to put an end to his misery. He buys a rickety Peugeot 504 and sets himself up as a bush taxi-driver. The motor stalls. He uses it for grinding flour, becomes a mediocre miller. The mill gives up the ghost. The man is at death's door. His wife is obliged to become a prostitute in the cornfields to earn enough to take care of their two congenitally deformed children. About
I was randomly leafing through a newspaper devoted to French-speaking countries when I stumbled on a hilarious article that sent me into howls of laughter. The story took place in northern Benin, where I come from. Some guy was cheated by his own cousin, who was acting as interpreter during a business transaction over millet and manioc. How that story reminded me of my own childhood in the streets of Cotonou and all our penny schemes in the hope of buying ridiculous Western gadgets. These ideas instantly inspired “Barbecue-Pejo.”
