An Afternoon with a Torturer
あらすじ
"An Afternoon with a Torturer" is the story of a bungled confession. Frant Tandara, a former torturer in the prisons of Communist Romania, has agreed to confess his crimes to a journalist and a former political prisoner. He awaits the arrival of his two visitors at the Giugiu train station. Ill at ease, he awkwardly greets them with a bouquet of flowers. After a tense drive, they reach the farm where Tandara lives with his wife. Right from the start, the confession is plagued with problems: the tape recorder jams, Tandara speaks too fast or too slowly, his story sounds contrived. The son of a soldier, he became a homeless drifter when World War II ended. He slept in train stations and lived a hobo existence. While evoking his shady past, Tandara never really comes clean. The torturer does everything he can to skirt around the truly difficult parts of his confession. Fearing that the interview may end before important issues have been brought to light, the journalist presses Tandara for details about his time as a torturer in psychiatric clinics – to no avail. Tandara ’s wife intervenes and asks them to go easy on her husband, to stop torturing him. Besides, it’s getting late, and if they’re to make their train, they’ll have hurry …
