あらすじ
After the public rape of her best friend, director Samaher Alqadi picks up her camera as a weapon against the explosion of politically charged sexual terrorism that sweeps through Cairo's Tahrir Square in the aftermath of the Arab Spring. She starts documenting the ensuing protests and vigilante anti-rape patrols that spontaneously erupt throughout the city. When Samaher becomes pregnant, she begins to re-examine the constructs of her own childhood and how her fate was determined simply because she was born a girl.
As I Want is an urgent and courageous feature documentary film that dares to explore the roots of gender inequality in Middle Eastern society. Through a unique and deeply intimate narrative, Alqadi delves into her personal history to recount painful memories of her childhood where she illustrates the traditional barriers to individual freedom that many girls in Arab society face as they grow up. Inspired by the millions of women raising their voice against gender violence, Alqadi realizes the key to her future lies in confronting herself with her past.
