In Search of Eva Freud
あらすじ
Isabelle Sieurin, a philosophy teacher at Lycée Calmette, formerly a girls' high school in Nice, is conducting an investigation about one of the school's former students: Eva Freud. From 1934 to 1942, after fleeing Nazi Germany because she was Jewish, the beloved granddaughter of the founder of psychoanalysis settled in France, attended this same school in Nice, made many friends, including Simone Jacob, the future Simone Veil. Eva had beauty, charm, elegance, and a famous name that fascinated the young girls around her. But in September 1943, this happy period came to an end. The Nazis occupied Nice. The persecutions and roundups were orchestrated by Aloïs Brunner under Nice's blue sky. Sixteen Jewish schoolgirls perished in the horror of Nazi extermination camps. A commemorative plaque at the entrance of the school today remembers their disappearance. Yet one name is missing; that of Eva. What became of her?

Sixteen-year-old Diane exists exclusively through her mother's gaze. But this intensely close bond between Diane and her mother, Sophie, is becoming increasingly problematic for the teenager. At high school, she would like to be loved like she is at home and expresses it in an awkward way like when she exchanges a favor for a look, in the toilets. A loudmouth, provocative, and seeking attention, Diane tries to stand apart from her mother and wishes, during a weekend, to live like an adult.
