German women have long been perceived as passive witnesses to the crimes of the Nazi regime. However, they actively participated in the dictatorship, with some proving to be as brutal and ruthless as their male counterparts. They were even indispensable cogs in the Nazi death machine, present at every stage and everywhere: from the ghettos to the Gestapo offices, concentration camps and schools.
Over the past fifteen years, a new generation of historians from around the world (including award-winning Wendy Lower, Elizabeth Harvey, Johann Chapoutot, Christian Ingrao, and others) has shed light on the full involvement of women in the Third Reich.
Through their insightful analyses and striking archival footage, this film reveals the previously unknown stories of these women who were not content to live in the shadow of their Nazi masters.
