In 2023, Marseille saw 49 «narcomicides,» a blend of narcotrafficking and homicide, a term perfectly suited to the city. Amidst revenge killings and random shootings, the details of these murders are rarely known. After the fact, the press profiles the victims: often young boys involved in drug trafficking, or innocent bystanders caught in the crossfire. But what about the killers? Who are these figures firing assault rifles at rivals or neighbors? According to the justice system, behind the mask is often just a child: 60% of those indicted for murders and attempted murders linked to drug trafficking are between 14 and 21 years old! This investigative report dives into the phenomenon of the «baby killers» in Marseille. Over several months, our journalists managed to film the low-ranking enforcers and hitmen of the two powerful criminal gangs battling for control of drug-dealing spots: Yoda and DZ Mafia. In Marseille, three-quarters of the murders are tied to this turf war. Contracts range from €10,000 to €30,000, recruitment happens via social media, and some hired killers are barely 15 years old, with some even forced into the deadly work.
