The statistic is appalling and speaks volumes about the evil plaguing the world’s most populous country. In India, 86 rapes are officially reported every day. Since women often do not dare to report them, and authorities are reluctant to record the complaints, the actual number is likely much higher.
In the west of the country, in the prosperous and conservative state of Gujarat, the story of Kinjal—now 17 years old—illustrates the scourge of rape plaguing India. Three years ago, this young girl, who belongs to the Dalit community—the “Untouchables” at the very bottom of the caste system—was raped by the son of a landowner from a higher caste. To cover up the incident, the rapist’s family offered Kinjal’s parents land and 100,000 euros—a fortune. But Kinjal’s father refused the settlement and chose instead to take the case to court. A rare act of courage, but an affront to the higher castes. As a symbol of his struggle, he decided to let his hair grow and not cut it until his daughter has obtained justice. To help Kinjal rebuild her life and face the ordeal of the Indian court system, the family can count on the support of Manjula Pradeep. This activist, a Dalit herself, now devotes her life to defending women who have been raped. She wants to believe that every victim she helps will be the last.
For six months, the Arte Reportage team accompanied Kinjal and her family on their quest for justice. A deep dive into the heart of Indian society, where caste-based violence and the weight of tradition dictate the lives of hundreds of millions of women.
