Durban hosts its 31st International Film Festival
The 2010 Durban International Film Festival (DIFF) will take place from July 22 through August 1.
The DIFF is southern Africa's largest film festival, with a resolutely international focus and a competition section featuring films from across the globe.
After last year’s Focus on France section, a host of French films will be showcased at the event this year: Chicks by Sophie Letourneur, The Concert by Radu Mihaileanu, Copacabana by Marc Fitoussi, Moloch Tropical by Raoul Peck, A Screaming Man by Mahamat-Saleh Haroun, The Time That Remains by Elia Suleiman, White Material by Claire Denis, and Wild Grass by Alain Resnais.
At this year's festival, the French Embassy and Unifrance are working in partnership to raise the profile of the French films and French-language African films screened at the event. A selection of French films will be presented, with invitations extended to artists and key personalities associated with these films as well as key figures of the French movie industry. A reception will also be hosted during the festival.
The festival’s first Film Market will be held this year, offering an ideal platform for promoting a new Co-production Agreement that was signed at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival among South African film and television industry professionals.
Unifrance highlights its presence at the 2010 festival with a number of initiatives undertaken:
- Support provided to the South African distributor Videovision for the presentation of preview screenings of two French films, involving negotiated fees for pre-used film prints and covering subtitling costs for the 35mm prints of Wild Grass by Alain Resnais and The Concert by Radu Mihaileanu.
- The publication of a promotional brochure for the French film selection.
- Invitations extended to artists and industry figures associated with the films selected, including Raoul Peck (Head of the French National Film School La FEMIS) and Isaach de Bankolé (for White Material).
