Northern France. Christmas. Blast-furnaces belch their smoke into the wintry sky. A scrap metal dealer kills his wife. What for ? Maybe because the boredom is even worse when there are two of you. Or maybe for other, more secret motives which this likeable killer still doesn't know, and which he'll slowly, reluctantly have to find out. When a local supermarket goes up in flames the scrap dealer reports his wife missing in the blaze, although in fact he got rid of her in a blastfurnace. It's the perfect murder. The police believe that the unidentified remains of one of the shoppers (they now fit in a shoe box) are those of his wife. Perfect, but only for 3 days. On the 4th day another man - a decent guy, a landscape gardener - also reports that his wife never came back from shopping at the supermarket. One corpse, two claimants, strange ! Police Chief Voilot and his ambitious female deputy smell a very large rat. for our scrap dealer, things start to go wrong. Racked with remorse about usurping the gardener's dead life, he makes friend with his rival, and uses the opportunity to conduct his own investigation. But what does he turn up ?
