We are in 1948. André is barely nineteen when he is forced to leave Portugal, because of political problems. In Porto, he is introduced to Lambaça, a smuggler and mercenary, who knows very well all the ways to pass the frontiers. With few money in the pocket, Andre takes the train, then the bus. During his travel, before to meet the police, he is obliged to get out of the bus. He thinks that Lambaça just before to meet the police, he is obliged to get out of the bus. He thinks that Lambaça just let him down. He walks down to the next village, where he meets Lambaça, puffing thoughtfally on his cigarette. Andre is furious with him, but after a meal, and an explanation they start a long travel through mountains and valleys of the north of Portugal. During this long walk, adventures follow one another...
