"When I first talk to Daniel Auteuil, he said he felt uneasy. Credible though he felt as a violin-maker, a cop or a family doctor, he couldn't see himself playing the part of a psychoanalyst. I thought to myself that for everyone's good, we had to unlock this mental barrier. So I gave him this key : "Maybe the audience won't realize it, but the psychoanalyst you have to play has a secret. He hasn't finished his own analysis." Auteuil instantly calmed down, no doubt because he'd realized the flaw in the character. And his performace was every bit as great as his initial nervousness !"
