I wanted make a film about the legal system, but without any courtroom scenes. I
preferred to tell this story about a small magistrate from the backwoods (a woman—did you know that 70% of magistrates are women?) who comes to Paris to work on big cases and betrays her love in order not to betray her responsibilities. I thought it was a beautiful story about a topic that’s never been dealt with before: all those hustlers sniffing around the seats of power, brokering shady deals.... (Jean-Pierre Mocky)
