I went to see railroad workers for a story about the strike. We became friends, and when I decided I wanted to do a film, some of them wanted to be in it. I didn’t assign roles, and I was pretty scared during the first public reading of the script, attended by everyone – train drivers as well as actors and crew. I was afraid Nadia’s story wouldn’t mean anything to them. But it worked, and they volunteered to come back for the shoot!
