It’s the story of three sisters, Rosa, Cristina and Ana, whose only point in common is the family name.
Christina, 24, a young, dynamic woman, studies literature by day and works in a club by night. Maybe she is just a little too dynamic trying to cover up that she no longer feels so young! She gets by living in a pokey, dark little room. She almost never sleeps, her best friend no longer eats and her so-called fiancé, a young Frenchman, is pathologically, but no doubt justifiably, jealous.
Rosa is the prototype of a yuppie. She recently turned 30, is an executive in a multinational company, lives in a gigantic apartment, drives an Alfa Romeo, has a designer office and a personal secretary. However, she has no friends, relationships or even a personal life, for her work is everything. She wastes twelve hours a day earning money from which she’ll never benefit
Ana is happily married – or so everyone thinks. Her husband is too busy with himself to take care of her. Her son spends all day at a childcare center, leaving Ana free to do nothing, or almost nothing, all day long.
Given that their mother is a pharmacist, neither sister has any hangups about pills. Rosa can’t live without her 50mg of Prozac. Ana drowns her melancholy in Valium, and Cristina draws the energy for her nocturnal life from Ecstasy. Of course none of them are drug-dependent and each of them believes that only her life is worth living and that the two other sisters have taken the wrong path. Rosa, empowered by her success, doesn’t understand why Cristina doesn’t decide, once and for all, to find a serious job, with its ancillary health benefits, and deeply scorns Ana’s unproductive uselessness. Cristina agrees with Rosa on one thing – Ana’s vacuous lifestyle – but is convinced that being an executive is a kind of intellectual prostitution. As for Ana, it’s not that she really wants to think about her sisters’ fates, but, frankly a life without a husband doesn’t make much sense.
Apart from their taste for pills, the sisters also share an obsessive teenage crush on Mikel, the former attentive escort from their holidays in Biarritz. He suddenly reappears in their lives after a 10-year absence, a shadow of his former self. Once a handsome young man, he is now a human wreck eaten away by drugs. It’s time for the three sisters to deal with their individual contradictions and to admit that perhaps they need one another more than they’d like to admit.
