Alain, a bank executive, wants to have a child with his girlfriend, Anna. But Anna pictures herself as a famous pianist rather than as a mother. Everything changes when the couple get a little cocker spaniel, Bamboo. After passing an audition, Anna goes off on tour with an internationally renowned conductor. Her absence accentuates the differences between the couple and they decide to separate. Alain finds himself alone without a girlfriend or a baby, but instead with a little dog that he finds more than annoying. Despite their conflictual relationship, a real bond forms between the pair. In this difficult period, which leads Alain to quit his job and to hang out with hoodlums in disreputable places, he also encounters veterinarians, SPCA services and even a psychiatrist for dogs before finally realizing that Bamboo is probably the last tie still uniting him with Anna.
