The Official Selection of the 61st Venice Mostra, to be held from September 1st through 11th, 2004, has been unveiled. Five French productions are included among the 21 feature films presented at the event.
Vying for the coveted Golden Lion are the new films by Claire Denis (“L’Intrus”), François Ozon (“5x2”) and Arnaud Desplechin (“Rois et reines”), along with “Promised Land Hotel” by Amos Gitaï and “Le Chiavi di casa,” a Franco-Italian co-production directed by Gianni Amelio.
Numerous films will also be presented out of competition, including the latest Claude Chabrol, “La Demoiselle d’honneur,” “Eros,” a series of three films directed by Wong Kar-Waï, Steven Soderbergh and Michelangelo Antonioni, as well as “O Quinto Imperio” by Manuel de Oliveira.
The Horizons Section is presided this year by Nicolas Philibert, Brian Helgeland and Fiorella Infascelli. Films selected include ”Les Revenants” by Robin Campillo, ”Les Petits Fils” by Ilan Duran Cohen, ”La Femme de Gilles” by Frédéric Fonteyne, ”Zulu Love Letter” by Ramadam Suleman and ”Banania ou Thiaroye” by Rachid Bouchareb. Finally, the Critics’ Week selection will feature ”Les Liens” by Aymeric Mesa-Juan and ”Le Grand Voyage” by Ismaël Ferroukhi, and the Venice Days section will showcase “L’œil de l’autre” by John Lvoff and “Darwin’s Nightmare” by Hubert Sauper. “Morasseix” by Damien Odoul will be presented in a special screening.
On the short film front, France will be represented by “Sous le bleu“ by David Oelhoffen (Corto Cortissimo Section), and by "L' ami y'a bon" by Rachid Bouchareb (Algeria/ Francia - 9' - Venezia Orizzonti Section - Eventi speciali).
This year’s festival jury includes Wolfgang Becker, Mimmo Calopresti, Scarlett Johansson, Spike Lee, Dusan Makavejev, Helen Mirren, Pietro Scalia and Xu Feng, headed by British director, John Boorman.
