Music for the Movies : Toru Takemitsu is a portrait of an innovative artist whose distinctive sensibilities have shaped the most extraordinary films of JapanUs New Wave. Collaborating with internationally acclaimed directors Hiroshi Teshigahara (Woman in the dunes), Akira Kurosawa (Ran, Dodeskaden), Nagisa Oshima (Empire of Passion), Masahiro Shinoda (Double Suicide) and Masaki Kobayashi (Kwaidan), Takemitsu has scored more than ninety films, crating music that distinguishes him as one of the greatest film composers of the late Twentieth Century. Rare interviews of JapanUs greatest directors are interweaved with extensive excerpts from their films and footage of the composer at work to create an engaging exploration of this complex musician and his art. This film is part of an exciting documentary series chronicling the influence music has had on the making of movies.
