あらすじ
Moussa, son of Algerian immigrants, and his friend Jean-Luc are in their twenties and live in Saint-Denis in the Paris suburbs. They witness a robbery in a jeweller's shop and the arrest of the thief after he dumps his booty. They get the haul and use this windfall to make their dreams come true... Moussa buys a bar and Jean-Luc sets up his law practice in the back room. They are in love with two very different sisters. Souad, the older of the two, is a liberated and rebellious young woman. Farida is a student and wears the chador. But Moussa's mother has arranged his marriage to young woman from Algeria whom he has never met...

"If one takes a close look at the so-called "suburbs" phenomenon and the different films claiming to deal with the suburbs, there is, in my view, a genuine attempt by filmmakers to get back to popular realism. In addition, audiences want to see character with "personality", who are natural, who are not necessary good actors like in the theatre. The cinema is a social actor in its own right. It's a popular art, like the circus and other modes of expression, that isn't very elitist, that reaches the masses."
