あらすじ
15世紀、英仏百年戦争下のフランス。小さな農村に生まれた信仰深い少女ジャンヌ(ミラ・ジョヴォヴィッチ)は17歳を迎えて神の声を聞き、シノン の城で王太子シャルル(ジョン・マルコヴィッチ)に謁見。自分は神の使者だと語るジャンヌに国母ヨランド・ダラゴン(フェイ・ダナウェイ)と重臣らは不安 を抱きつつも、彼女に軍を率いることを許す。白い甲冑に身を固めたジャンヌはデュノア伯ジャン(チェッキー・カリョ)らが待つ前線に向かい兵士を鼓舞、み ごとに勝利した。英国軍との激戦のさなか、ジャンヌは矢に胸を貫かれながらも命をとりとめ、英国軍を退却させた。この勝利で王太子はシャルル7世として即 位。その間もジャンヌは進撃を続けたが、ヨランドらはジャンヌの人気を危惧し、彼女を裏切って敵に売ろうとしていたため、軍は疲弊。気づくと、ジャンヌは 国内の敵たるブルゴ-ニュ派の黒頭巾の謎の男(ダスティン・ホフマン)の手中に落ちて、囚われの身となっていた。異端審問にかけられ、一度は改悛の宣誓書 を書かされたジャンヌだが、やがて良心が打ち勝ち、彼女は宣誓を拒否。かくして1431年ルーアンでジャンヌは火刑台に上り、19歳の生涯を閉じるのだっ た。

About
At first, I didn't know much about Joan of Arc. I had a stereotyped, classic image of her that wasn't very interesting. Then I took a closer look at her story out of curiosity, and it really read like a thriller – there are so many gaps, uncertainties and also errors that you start playing Sherlock Holmes in order to figure things out. In the fifteenth century, aged 19, this young woman had such conviction, had such a career, had such an incredible destiny that I was truly impressed. It's amazing to realize that she was sentenced as a heretic and made a saint. And it's interesting to realize that she could only be one or the other, as though she had no right to be normal, as though those two extremes were linked by an invisible thread.
