Hollywood 1928. John Gilbert, nicknamed "The Great Lover," had a meteoric rise to fame similar to that experienced by Charlie Chaplin and Douglas Fairbanks. But three years later, the best paid actor in Hollywood is forgotten by all. His career is that of a shooting star: brief, fierce, and passionate, bruised by a system and by his tireless conflict with the all-powerful director of MGM, Louis B. Mayer.

Sixteen-year-old Diane exists exclusively through her mother's gaze. But this intensely close bond between Diane and her mother, Sophie, is becoming increasingly problematic for the teenager.
