Margaret is a writer whose safe, orderly existence and seven-year marriage to a professor of English come apart at the seams when she embarks on the translation of a journal in which an 18th-century Frenchman describes the emotional and sexual emancipation of a girl he has seduced. Her work raises questions and fantasies in Margaret’s mind, whipping her life into a crazy whirlwind that engulfs her husband, family and friends.
