About
"The two stories of "The deluge" - that of the novel and that of the film - reflect in one another. Zamyatin's "The Deluge" was published in Russia in 1929. In 1931, he went into exil in France. In 1935-36, Zamyatin wrote the screenplay for "The Lower Depths", based on Gorky's play, for Jean Renoir. One year later, he died, unknown in France and banned in Russia. Half a century later, Isabelle Huppert discovered Zamyatin's novel. She fell in love with it and immediately wanted to play the character of Sophia (...). I consider Isabelle to be a true Sophia. We shot in Petrograd - Leningrad - St Petersburg. We spoke Russian, we spoke French... We went to Petrograd - Leningrad - St Petersburg like in the novel. In Moscow, we created a "little Petrograd" on gigantic sets. And we used artificial snow in the studio when it was snowing outside..."
